     AIAM Position Statement Update

The AIAM Committee has over time developed Position Statements on important topics for the industry. These have included Urban Animal Management in Disaster Planning, Barking Dogs and Permanent Identification Devices and are available to Members through the Resources tab on the AIAM website.

The Committee has recently reviewed the Position Statement on Managing Dog Aggression in the Community and is looking for feedback prior to its adoption at the Annual General Meeting being held in Darwin in October this year.

Firstly, the name has been updated to bring it more in line with the outcomes that we all want - Reducing dog bites to humans in the community. The body, intention and direction of the content has also been updated incorporating new learnings through Mr Jim Crosby M.S. CBCC-KA, our Keynote Speaker from Florida USA at the 2017 Workshops held in Caroline Springs, Victoria.

At the Workshops Jim provided a rare insight into further investigation techniques and best practice for data capture formats with a focus on dog bite prevention.

As your representatives, your feedback is important to us. Comments and suggestions can be emailed to the President by Friday,  31 May 2019.

Please feel free to share other topics that you’d like a national position on.

#G2Z2019 Call for Abstracts are open

G2Z are pleased to announce that the Call for Abstracts for the 8th National G2Z Summit are open.
The theme for the 2019 Summit is Beyond The Shelter

It will focus on the latest programs, practices and strategies that engage the community to effectively influence intake and achieve positive outcomes for our shelter and pound facilities.

We seek answers to questions such as:

    • What can we do to prevent intake?
    • How can we reduce the numbers of homeless cats and dogs and the concerns the community has about them?
    • How can we keep people and their pets together?
    • How can companion animal management and sheltering be looked at from a broader perspective?
    • How can we empower owners, carers and those without pets to be a part of the solutions?

If you have some answers to these questions through your own programs and innovations, we are now accepting abstracts for the 8th National G2Z Summit.

Other topics relating to community welfare, animal welfare, and responsible pet ownership will also be investigated and addressed.

The closing date for abstract submissions is 7/4/19

View the guidelines for abstract submission here.

AIAM media release - Hunter Valley set to host national Local Government Conference

The Australian Institute of Animal Management (AIAM) will be holding its annual Animal Management sector workshops at the Crowne Plaza in the Hunter Valley, 17-19 October 2018.

The event will be officially opened by Cessnock City Council Mayor, Cr Bob Pynsett.

A highlight for delegates will be  keynote speaker Dr Gabrielle Carter. Dr Carter is a Veterinarian and Specialist in Animal Behaviour.

For the last 15 years she has been helping owners solve their pet’s behaviour problems. Additionally she is involved in teaching animal behavior to veterinarians, veterinary nurses and veterinary students.

More recently, she served as Chief Veterinarian at the RSPCA Victoria, managing both their veterinary and animal behaviour services.

Dr Carter will be presenting on the common causes of aggression in dogs and more.

AIAM’s President Ms Elke Tapley says “2018 marks the Institute’s 12th year in providing quality training workshops for Local Government Animal Management Officers and the sector, around the country”

Ms Tapley said “our program for New South Wales will include research, strategy, dealing with dog aggression, Officer safety, animal hoarding and initiatives to reduce animal intake and euthanasia.”

“We encourage Local Government employers to maximise the opportunities presented for officers, particularly locally in New South Wales.”

Local Government Animal Management Officers (AMOs) throughout Australia are engaged daily in community animal control and regulation work. Their job is to maximize community health, safety and amenity by minimizing the negative social, environmental and financial impacts of inappropriately managed animals.
